Volcanoids combines steampunk and the survival genre. You land on an island where volcanoes regularly erupt. Your only saving grace is a steam-powered digging module. With this you hide underground during the volcanic eruption. You then ascend back to the surface.
Building a base in Volcanoids
For you, the setting has a touch of steampunk and the primary aim is to build a stable base. The homeland you return to is rendered uninhabitable by volcanic eruptions. You use a submarine and the help of the ship's captain to gain a foothold. To do this, you mine ores, switch devices on or off and use warehouses to store your raw materials.
The resources
You primarily need the resources coal, sulfur and copper. In the beginning, mainly used screws, copper plates and copper tubes for mechanical engineering. A small drilling ship is created that is its 1st good prerequisite for surviving on the island. You explore the island and use it as a mobile base, workshop and later as a shelter. It's a bit like a mobile fortress.
The volcano
The dangerous thing about the island is that the volcano erupts every half hour. The island will be covered in ashes and everyone on it will be burned to ashes. There are also robot-like creatures called COG, which attack everything that gets in sight.
The character of Volcanoids
Your character has life energy and stamina above all. You can carry 5 different things with you. There is the wrench, which is one of the essential tools for survival and with which you can repair or rebuild everything. You mine resources with the pickaxe.
Your weapons
As a weapon you use a revolver at the beginning. More weapons will be available to you later, as well as more tools. Some items you cannot craft alone and must loot from enemies. Your research department researches them so that you can then use them yourself.
The Drillship
Everything in the game revolves around this ship. It is at once home, workshop, vehicle and fortress. You can also cover long distances with the drilling ship. Only with him can you feel safe when the volcano erupts. For that I have to dig the ship into the ground. For the ship itself there are many extensions later. Your character cannot be expanded or optimized either. At the beginning, the ship consists of only one segment. The ship is no bigger than a small hut. You'll add more segments later. This includes stations, devices, doors, windows, guns or storage rooms, to name just a few examples.
The crafting
Crafting is your key to survival. In the game you collect coal, copper and sulphur, produce ingots or powder and create extensions for your ship. Weapons, ammunition, repair material, partitions and new stations are also on your production list. You can build many crafting stations more than once. Several refineries, for example, speed up the production process. This can reduce manufacturing times for your products. However, you have to think carefully about what you place, because infinite space is not available to you in the drillship.
Conclusion on Volcanoids
The game offers an interesting twist on the survival genre. In particular, the steampunk aspect should appeal to many players. Above all, the goal is to defeat the robots and stop the volcanic eruptions. The game is currently in Early Access and still involves some construction sites. Volcanoids developers are hard at work creating an innovative and fun game. Aspects of character development can still be improved, but if you try it with the Early you will definitely get an interesting and entertaining game.
