Retro Studios is a game developer based in Austin, Texas. They are a subsidiary of Nintendo. They are one of Nintendo's eight external development studios and one of the 16 first-party development studios.
incorporation and sale
In 1995, Acclaim Entertainment bought out Iguana Entertainment. In 1998, Jeff Spangenberg, the studio's co-founder and president, was fired. On October 1st, 1998 they founded the development studio as a new developer. Nintendo committed the studio as the exclusive developer. In 2001, Spangenberg sold his shares to the Nintendo company. He then left the studios. The sale made the studios Nintendo's second first-party developer. The studio's games include the Metroid Prime Games as well as Donkey Kong Country adaptations and Mario Kart 7.
