Post Void is a game by developer YCJY Games that was released in early August. It's one of the better shooters of 2020. The game is a compact experience that focuses entirely on the rush of dashing down corridors and shooting. It's a bit like an arcade light gun game, only accelerated by 500x.
The rules of POST VOID
The rules are very simple: you start with a pistol and with your idol full of vital essence. You move through corridors full of enemies. If you run out of health you will die. If you stop killing you will die once the timer runs out and your idol is empty. You learn to keep an eye on your idol while aiming and moving. The only way to live is to make it to the oasis at the end of the level. There you will receive a random upgrade, e.g. B. a new weapon or enemies that now explode when they die and level up.
The pass
A bad run through a level is clumsy and slow. You stop to fire multiple shots at a target rather than a clean headshot. You collect orbs you need. If you turn down wrong corridors, you'll fight enemies you wouldn't otherwise have to fight. It's frustrating right now, but looking back, you realize how much you've improved after a few warm-up laps.
the levels
Each level is procedurally generated, so you can't memorize paths. You have to be willing to adapt. You have to focus on your own swing and the better you get at the game, the more graceful and streamlined your movement will be.
enemies and environment
Post Void does a lot with very little. There aren't many enemies, and you hardly ever see them if you play properly. The environments are visually noisy and sometimes even ugly. There are no places to rest and few details to admire. The color palette seems to be inspired by old punk records, and everything is pixelated and animated in an annoying way.
Action
None of that matters because the design works for the fast-paced action - and that action is good. Each weapon is effective in its own way and rewards you by providing additional visual and audio feedback on successful hits. The starting pistol is a one-hit kill if you can land a headshot, but is next to useless for bodyshots. When you land a body shot on an enemy, all you hear is the sound of your pistol. A headshot, on the other hand, yields a satisfying and immediate squelch that slams against the soundtrack.
The melee
The knife lends itself to close combat and is deadly. Charge, kill, grow, die and repeat are the order of the day. Each run is self-contained and extremely short. Mistakes are not forgiven. You'll find that you'll improve over time.
The level of difficulty
The difficulty will be an obstacle for some people. If you headshot a small, fast-moving target and fail to hit, you won't be able to get far into Post Void. Each run also ends with flashing images, so an accessibility mode is mandatory to avoid migraines or seizures. Fortunately, the game starts with a warning about the effect.
Conclusion
Post Void manages to stubbornly tie you to the game. The game impresses in its own way. You strive for perfection, even if it means dying over and over again to get better...or at least to be satisfied. It's definitely worth a look for shooter fans and hardcore gamers.
