Build a Level with Snaps Prototype Prefabs and Greybox: Greyboxing is a process used in Unity project development to help you quickly
Build a prototype of a level. Snaps Prototype packs available from the Asset Store will be
used in the Unity editor to create an environment with simple shapes.
The use of these blocks is known as greyboxing because it is in the early stages of
Development, not using materials or textures to build the level.
greyboxing
Greyboxing has several functions. It can offer:
- A first draft that serves as the basis for completion
Level.
- A reference for GameObjects, props and other scene elements.
- The flexibility to iterate designs, adapt the basic shape of assets,
and fixing any issues before development continues.
1. Voraussetzungen
In these instructions, the Sci-Fi / Industrial Snaps Prototype package is used as an example. You can use any Snaps Prototype package. The packages are ideal for
Prototype environments, and can be customized for a wide variety of projects.
2. Before you start
Probuilder and ProGrids are required to use the Snaps packages. Probuilder and ProGrids are installed as part of the Snaps Asset Pack or can be installed separately with the Package Manager.
3. Create a new scene and download the asset package
1. Create a new Unity project or use an existing project.
2. Install the ProGrids and ProBuilder packages with the Package Manager.
3. Open the Asset Store in the Unity Editor. Look for snaps. Download and
Then import the Snaps Prototype Sci-Fi / Industrial package.
4. When a message appears asking you to confirm the upgrade of the ProBuilder
and / or ProGrids packages click No. This should be left as installed.
5. Import the Snaps package as usual (Figure 04).

Figure 03: Reject package upgrade from ProGrids and ProBuilder as the latest version
Versions should be installed via the Package Manager before importing the Snaps SciFi / Industrial Prototype.
4. Content and layout
The Snaps Prototype package contains pre-built Assetsthat can be used to compose a level or scene in the Unity editor. These assets are grouped into categories, each of which has its own folder. In the Sci-Fi/Industrial pack, these categories are Decor, Props and Structure (Figure 05).
5. Activate ProGrids
The Snaps Prototype Package contains pre-built assets that can be used to assemble
A layer or scene in the Unity editor. These assets are divided into categories.
Each of them has its own folder. In the Sci-Fi / Industrial pack you will find this category
Decor, props and structure.
1. Create a new scene in Unity for prototyping.
2. Go to Extras> ProGrids> ProGrids Window to activate the ProGrids network

1. Network settings: This button shows the initial net offset. Press the button to open the network settings.
Click click the button to open the “Align Settings” window. Here you can change the values of the network settings and other things.
Press the minus button to quickly change the adhesion to the mesh when positioning assets
(-) to move the object half the displayed mesh distance. Press the plus button (+) and
double the displayed distance.
2. Grid visibility: This button turns the grid visibility on or off. Sticking or "Snap" is still active, even if the grid visibility is switched off. Use this to turn off the grid indicator when it's in the way.
3. Snap activated: This button toggles the snap to the grid when moving objects. It also shows whether snapping is enabled or disabled. With this function you can position objects that do not have to be aligned with the grid.
4.Push-to-Grid: This button captures all selected objects at the grid positions
each axis. This is a great way to quickly snap multiple objects to the closest axis.
5. Follow Grid: This button switches the grid position that is to be displayed on the object. The original location or a static location are displayed. If the option is locked, the grid will be anchored in the current position. In the locked state you can hold the grid in the selected axis (with the X, Y or Z keys below) with the bracket keys ([])
- The ProGrids options can be changed in the Unity settings.
A great way to use this feature is to select an object that you want to align. The alignment can be done using other assets or you can lock the network in one position. The grid is static for visual purposes.
6. Define the grid levels:
X: This button switches the grid display on the X-axis.
Y: This button switches the grid display on the Y-axis.
Z: This button switches the grid display on the Z-axis.
3D: This button switches the grid display on all 3 axes.
6. Scene views
There are several ways to view the scene in Unity. The perspective view
is the default display mode. The scene gizmo shows the current orientation and.
You can change the view mode of the scene. The scene gizmo is in the top corner of the scene view and shows a cube in the center of the cones

Clicking on the conical axis arms of the gizmo changes the angle of the scene and changes the view of the axis it represents. Orthographic or isometric views are flat two-dimensional views as opposed to perspective views that show depth.
For an orthographic view of the scene, click on the cube in the middle of the gizmo or click on the label below the gizmo icon. The icon changes from perspective to
orthographic.

Click on any of the conical axes to view it from that angle. Alternatively, you can right-click over the cube and select one of the angles from the menu.

If an orthographic view is shown in the scene, there is a button for angle visibility instead of the “Grid Planes Button”. You will see these instead of the “Define grid levels” button. This way you can toggle the visibility of the angle guides. This function is useful for visually aligning objects. At a certain angle, it is not possible to snap into this angle of rotation.
7. Placing the assets
1. Open the “Structure” folder of Snap's Prototype Prefab Asset in the project window.
2. Drag an asset into the hierarchy window to add it to the current scene. Make sure that the position of the object is set to Pivot and not to Center.

Pre-built Snaps assets are created with the pivot point set on an edge of the. Each asset has a common set of dimensions, so they are linked together.

3. Add another asset to the scene and move it to a position in the grid next to the first one. If you are not familiar with the keyboard shortcuts in Unity:
Pressing the W key becomes the move tool or activates the move tool.
4. Add another asset to the scene.
8. Change the position and rotation of a snap Prototype of a pre-built asset
With ProGrids-Snap you can translate objects, but not in a specific rotation angle.
There will likely be times when you need to align rotation because the assets are designed to rotate at specific angles, usually 45 and 90 degrees.
You can use the snap function of the Unity editor to do this. For example to
Snap to 45 degrees:
a. Choose Edit> Grid and Snap Settings.
b. Set the Rotate value to 45 and close the Settings window.

c. If you're not familiar with the keyboard shortcuts in Unity, press E to turn on the rotation tool.

d. Hold down CTRL (PC) or COMMAND (Mac) before rotating an object.
Catch the rotation value in the snap settings.
e. Use the assets to determine the level or structure. As you do this, switch to the upper orthographic view to visualize the grid layout. One benefit of creating assets with this approach is that you can quickly move and change the layout. You can even remove it or change the design.
It can be useful to develop the level structure first before adding any props or decor.
9. Fazit
If you follow these steps with ProGrids in combination with the Snaps assets, you can create a level or quickly gray out a scene for a Unity project. You can cancel before delivery. Combine assets in the Snaps Prototype package to create a layout and make changes quickly if necessary.
