Megamagic: Wizards of the Neon Age by Beauty Fun Games transports you to a post-apocalyptic world full of magical lore. The descendants of those who survived a meteor impact two millennia ago can harness the power of Neon, allowing them to wield destructive powers.
The student Phoban in Megamagic
The story revolves around the young student Phoban, who inherited a magic wand from his late father, while his brother Diemon inherited an old tome. Phoban and Diemon live with their uncle Avery and are on the eve of their magical exams to become full-fledged wizards.
The Creature Fum
The main character Phoban is accompanied in dialogue segments by a humorous blue magical creature named Fum. However, when the magical beings running the academy discover Fum's existence, Phoban and Fum find themselves on the run from those who wish to use Fum as an ingredient in an ancient and powerful spell.
save fum
This sounds great on paper, but the story and characters aren't very memorable. The central element of this game is combat. Some great ideas have been implemented, but it falls short overall.
Spells and Grims
Combined with five different categories of spells that you can learn by acquiring scrolls and necessary items, Megamagic has a feature that allows you to summon the monsters you fight. Known as "Grims" in the world, if Phoban defeats enough of them and looks at their special moves, he can unlock and summon Grims to aid him in battle. Grims can also be used to solve puzzles in the open world, with various commands available via hotkeys and left clicks.
Enemy Attacks
With three difficulty levels such as easy, normal and old school, most of the combat consists of dodging enemy attacks. This gets boring over time as most enemies fire projectiles. A hotbar at the bottom allows for the selection of equipped spells as well as Grims that can be summoned. Since the combat system is real-time, hotkeys will save your life when you're overwhelmed by enemies that seem to respawn more times than they should.
The final battles
When Phoban encounters a boss, he will be fueled up and become Phoborn with the help of Fum. His attack and speed get boosts. Unfortunately, as fun as these fights are, the increase in power makes most bosses weak.
The sound
The soundtrack was composed by Hotline Miami 2 and Kung Fury's Mitch Murder. He's really fun to listen to. It's reminiscent of the 80s.
Conclusion to Megamagic
Unfortunately, a great soundtrack isn't enough to sustain interest. With sluggish character movement, boring fetch quests, and a poorly written screenplay, Megamagic: Wizards of the Neon Age doesn't save itself with '80s references either. The combat is too repetitive and the NPCs don't stand out enough. The RPG elements just fall short. The developer of the game is Beautifun Games.
