Hard Reset Redux is an FPS that will immerse you in a dystopian world full of robots and a lot of action, then you should definitely try Hard Reset Redux. In this game, you take on the role of Fletcher, an agent fighting an army of runaway robots invading the city. The Redux Edition remasters the original game and brings it to console for the first time, making it even better than before.
A generic plot and stylish cutscenes in Hard Reset Redux
Hard Reset Redux's plot is pretty generic overall, which might put some people off. The cutscenes that precede the gunfights are done in a similar comic style to the old Max Payne games, which suits the setting well. The plot basically just serves to give you an excuse to shoot things.
Phenomenal visual upgrade
The game is beautiful to look at after being revamped with the Redux edition. The visual style of the 2011 original has been retained, but the graphics have been improved and refined to make it look like it was made in 2016. Capturing the dystopian feel of movies like Blade Runner makes it easy to get sucked into the cyberpunk setting.
Awesome progression and weapon system
Hard Reset Redux only has two main weapons, a plasma gun and a machine gun. Yet the game offers so many options for inflicting pain that it has an old-school feel as you run around dodging incoming attacks that the gameplay is as fast-paced as Doom, Painkiller, and Serious Sam. Gain experience points by picking up items and killing enemies, and upgrade your weapons with different fire modes, alternate fire types, and passive boosts.
A few weaknesses, but still recommended
The game is a bit short and the story isn't very memorable. The cyber katana you get is only a standard melee weapon, but it's good at taking down cyber zombies, although it's limited against robots. Hard Reset Redux isn't exactly easy either, despite its still fairly short gameplay. Yet there are enough health and ammo supplies to see you through the game.
The opponents
The enemies are all robots and have different vulnerabilities that are not always obvious. There are some new variations of enemies like the cyborg zombies to rejuvenate the game for those who have played it before. The larger enemies seem a bit easier to take down, but their AI is capable of a variety of tactics. You have to be prepared for the fact that health does not regenerate and that you have to grab boosts during the game in order to survive.
The survival mode
Survival mode also returns, complete with online leaderboards, adding even more excitement to the game. This mode offers an endless challenge in which you fight against waves of enemies to survive as long as possible.
Conclusion
Overall, Hard Reset Redux is a great old-school shooter that impresses with its visual upgrade, awesome progression and weapon system, and fast-paced action. Despite some weaknesses, the game is definitely worth the price of admission.
