The Unity Timeline Editor is a built-in tool that lets you create and edit cinematic content, gameplay sequences, audio sequences, and complex particle effects. You can move clips on the timeline, change them at startup, and choose how they should be mixed and edited. The behavior with other clips on the track can also be adjusted. Every scene you create with the timeline editor consists of a timeline asset and a timeline instance.
Create a timeline asset
A timeline asset is any medium (tracks, clips, recorded animation) that can be used in your project. It is an external file or an image. This can also be an asset created in Unity, e.g. For example, an Animator Controller Asset or an Audio Mixer Asset.
To create a new timeline asset:
1. Select the GameObject that you want to use as the focus for your movie clip, or create an empty GameObject in which the timeline asset is saved.
2. Then go to Window–> Sequencing–> Timeline
Select Create in the timeline window and save this.
You control the assets and sequences in the editor window.
Timeline tracks
There are 6 different types of tracks. Each asset that you control in the timeline sequence represents its own track.
Activation track: Used to control when a track is activated in the timeline
Animation track: allows you to import existing animation clips or create an animation from scratch in the timeline
audio tracks: allows you to import and edit existing audio clips. Note that you cannot hear the sound outside of play mode.
Control track: allows you to control time-related elements of GameObjects, such as a Playable Director or a ParticleSystem
Payable track: allows you to trigger other timeline sequences
Track Group: Allows you to create a collection of tracks.
Signal track: Establishes a communication channel between the timeline and external systems.
Cinemachine track: Allows you to control the cine machine cameras in the timeline
The characters for the respective tracks are as follows:
Timeline preview:
You can preview the timeline by clicking the preview button in the top left of the timeline editor. Make adjustments in the preview and play the track in real time
Lock timeline tracks:
When you've finished editing, you can use the drop-down menu to lock the track by choosing Lock.
The Unity Timeline has a wide range of options. It gives you the opportunity to edit everything in context and is very user-friendly. You can freely arrange your GameObjects, animations, particles and sounds and quickly create your own content.
In the end, you record animations in the timeline and can play them or determine when they are played.
