You tidy up the shop, learn a craft and build up an inventory. Alchemy, Blacksmithing and Cooking are the three crafts you can learn. Each art has its own advantages. In order to craft and sell items, you need a permit. You can get this at City Hall. You can then acquire the raw materials for your craft to produce the first goods. For some goods you need raw materials and for others you need recipes.
