Find the 32 hidden talismans in Chiller. You have four levels available for this.
Hidden talismans in Chiller
These are displayed in a tile graphic at the start of each level and the images give you a clue as to their whereabouts. If you haven't found all the talismans by the end of the fourth level, the game will loop and continue at a harder difficulty level, although you'll keep all your current items. In addition, you have to torment the unfortunate souls on the screen to get the monster gauge down to zero and go to the next level.
The timer
A red timer keeps counting down. If you don't make it, it's Game Over. You can of course just shoot straight at the people on the screen, but that's the slowest way to progress. Instead, you should activate the torture devices like guillotines and head crushers so they do most of the work for you. The constant struggle between stacking up as much damage as you can to pass the level and exploring to find the hidden talisman is an interesting mechanic, but it gets old quickly.
Gameplay
The gameplay is incredibly boring and once you get past the initial shock factor there is very little that stands out. Using the light gun is unresponsive and inaccurate due to poor programming, and the excessive screen flicker is off-putting. At least the location of the talisman is easier to find as they stay solid white while the screen jumps! You can use a regular controller if you want, but dragging the cursor around is slow and makes the game much more difficult. The only music in the game is eight notes repeated in a truly terrifying melody!
Conclusion
Chiller is confusing because it's either a terrible game made by psychopaths or something designed to make us question our morals. In any case, it's not an entertaining experience, and even if you just focus on the gameplay elements, it's a poorly developed title. That's what it says NES-Game only: stay away!
