Chaos World

Chaos World, an old-school RPG originally only released in Japan but translated a few years ago for those willing to play it.

To the King's Castle in Chaos World

You start by creating your character, one of 7 classes and of both sexes, and then you go to the king's castle. It seems like his daughter is sick and since you are the descendant of a great warrior you have to go and find the cure, but this is only the beginning.

Dark religion

Something or someone has started spreading an evil religion and people who follow this religion start wars all over the world and this is how you gain friends, help every town or city and finally fight the great evil.

An old role-playing game

Chaos World is visually appealing, has great music, and simple gameplay. Oddly enough, it seems more complex than it really is. For example, in most RPGs, when you have an enemy encounter, you sit and stare at the screen while nothing happens, waiting for your gauge to fill up so you can press a button, choose an action, and choose a monster, that you want to attack. In Chaos World you just pick the fight and it's automated, but before the fight you can choose a specific attack formation from the plan if you like.

change of group

You can also change group members. Including the protagonist, there are 14 playable characters. You can only have 4 with you, so keep the rest ready to do guild jobs. But it only takes one person to do a guild job, and there's no reason to change party members because the newer folks are short of it. In addition, the differences between the classes are hardly noticeable. The rate of advancement for the levels is relatively high.

Problems in Chaos World

Sometimes the game is just confusing. There are not enough hints how to proceed. The game itself seems "chaotic".

Conclusion

Chaos World is a great game for the 8-bit era. Finding walkthroughs to help out in confusing situations so you can enjoy the gameplay, graphics, music, and cast of characters is the norm these days anyway. If you disregard the "chaos" the game is good for its time.
