The game is a simple 3rd person shooter where you take out a ton of enemies at the same time. That's the whole point of Cabal, mass murder.
You are two types who want to infiltrate and kill a lot of people. There is no reason or purpose for it. The graphics were simple and looked like they were. The buildings were all blocky in shape, and when you shot them a little cloud of smoke would appear, causing them to fall straight down and then disappear. Only the characters are detailed. They also dance a victory dance. All enemies look the same, and some differ in the color of the shirt depending on their importance. The bosses look strong as they are detailed and varied. The detail is very nice in some places but very faint in other places.
The sound basically sounds like a torrent of bullets being shot back and forth or grenades thrown. There is little music, and the music that is there is kind of annoying. The game is a 3rd person shooter. You stay on one screen and enemies keep popping off the pages. You have a goal and aim at all areas of the screen as enemies come from all over the place. This creates total chaos as you are constantly shooting from area to area. Fortunately, there are an unlimited number of balls. Now there are also buildings around the defenders to hide in, so your best bet is to shoot them down if you get the chance, if not fifty people are shooting at you.
Defense plays an even more important role. You have a stone wall and you use it to hide behind it while shooting at your enemies. The enemies will intentionally go out of their way to shoot down the walls later in the game in the hopes that they will fall down. But what if you no longer want to go behind the walls or want to change sides quickly? Of course, no good Sagittarius has powerups, and Cabal is full of them. By defeating enemies, you can get machine guns and other various weapon upgrades. This also includes grenades, which are very important for killing enemies and bosses. You take risks for the powerups as you have to go through a hail of bullets to reach them. After all, the game itself is pretty big. There are 5 worlds with 4 levels each. In these levels you will have to kill a certain number of enemies to move on. Each level has a different screen where enemies can use different objects as defenses. At the end of the 4th level in each world, you will come across a boss level. You are trying to shoot this boss down even though he has massive HP. These are not easy battles, and you will likely lose a life or two, but pass on. Each world has a different main setting, like some in the desert, other water levels, but it doesn't affect how the game plays.
The game can be played by two players. You and a friend can team up to attack your enemies on the same screen. You could work together strategically.
Conclusion
The game was originally released for NES. Graphics and sound could have been better, as could the gameplay. For fans of shooters, the game is worth a look, even if it's not one of the newest.
