Breakwaters puts you on a tropical beach with a mission to survive. The developer of the project is Soaring Pixels Games.
Survival on the beach in Breakwaters
Pick coconuts, crack coconuts, chop down palm trees and build a house. That's all well and good if it weren't for the masses of water that leveled it all back to the ground.
A game like Robinson Crusoe
Want to start out whether you're a man or a woman. Hairstyles and clothes can only be selected in color. With that, the Breakwaters character editor doesn't offer many options. Then you're thrown into a procedurally generated island world. At the beginning you are stuck on your starting island. You need a raft to get there.
On exploration
Explore in the third-person perspective with the appropriate music. You can vary the camera distance to the character. The introduction is given by a bald archaeologist in rags. He followed a titan he saw on the horizon. Is looking for relics of these.
The deal
You make a deal with the archaeologist and promise to help him find his relics and he will help you get off the deserted island. The tutorial gets its introduction about foraging, combat system and crafting from the game. A real story why you don't end up somewhere on the beach is not to be asked. The dialogues themselves are not particularly demanding and short.
Breakwaters gameplay
The gameplay is based on the classic survival genre. The whole thing is made more difficult by the water masses that regularly flood the land masses. This also means regular swimming sessions. For example, if you just died in battle and lose an entire inventory, it wouldn't be so bad if the tide wasn't washing away the remains you were trying to collect. The floods also provide women and disadvantages in combat.
The flood
The water seems almost alive. The currents come in whirlpools and crawl across the flat seabed. This creates holes in which the water sometimes disappears. However, this whole system also takes its toll in the graphics under Graphic Display. With certain potions, you can temporarily share the sea. This is especially useful when it comes to treasures.
The survival part
The main character can suffer from hunger and thirst, which is why you have to regularly go foraging for food. Crabs, chicken and coconuts are served with the food. In addition, collect resources such as shells, sea crystals and wood. Once lucky, craft a workbench that will help you craft survival items. It can be placed anywhere. There you can craft everything from a stone ax to a sword. You get the recipes for crafting as the story progresses.
The opponents
Enemies include, for example, rats, stone golems and pirates. If you find the first titan relics, you will be regularly attacked by titans from afar.
Conclusion on breakwaters
Breakwaters will definitely become friends of the survival genre. It brings some innovative points with it and graphically it is quite well done. The opponents are mostly a bit one-sided, but the game is still not easy. The combat system is reasonably successful. There are also classic survival aspects, such as fighting hunger and thirst and collecting raw materials, for example to manufacture weapons. Here's a thumbs up.
