With your stick and puck you go onto the ice in Blade of Steel. The ice hockey game was released for the NES.
Blade of Steel gameplay
There are eight teams, four of which are from Canada and four from the United States. There are also three difficulty modes and a single player as well as a two-player mode. The game is fast paced which makes for a lot of fun as everyone goes for the puck and everyone smashes and knocks each other down.
Graphics and sound
The sprites in Blades of Steel are detailed. There is no music during the game, but some mildly addictive tunes play at almost every other time. However, as with most other later NES games, there is some sampled speech.
minigames
If a player clashes with another player enough times, chaos will ensue as you enter a small combat minigame. You try to hit the other player before he hits you. The loser will be sent to the penalty box! During the second break you have the chance to play a small mini-game. This offers a fun break from the action and is pretty nifty.
Conclusion on Blades of Steel
Overall, Blades of Steel is a good, appropriately titled hockey game and is holding up well. Although the sound is missing when playing ice hockey itself, the graphics can be seen for the NES time. If you like ice hockey games, this game is for you.
