Big Nose Freaks Out is the second part of Camerica's Big Nose series. This part is also a prehistoric jump 'n' run. Bignose Freaks Out sends Camerica's Neanderthals on a funny one NES-Adventure.
Challenges in Big Nose Freaks Out
The game offers decent controls, graphics and fun combined with an evolved challenge level. However, it does not bring many innovations with it.
Deprived of the savings
Big Nose takes on Leroy in this action-adventure game. He stole the hero's pretty high bail from the local savings and bone bank.
On the hunt for thieves
To get Leroy straight to prison in BC, Big Nose has to traverse five average-looking worlds, each with four levels. On its hunt it goes through forests, fields, caves and factories. The scenery and graphics are not primitive, but average by 8-bit standards. The jungle sounds aren't that convincing. The game uses limited music and poor sound effects.
The gameplay
Bignose's side view gameplay is good. The caveman's main weapon is his club, but he can also use the Baseball-style hurl stones at enemies. Big Nose rides an ancient skateboard. The somewhat fast-paced one-wheeling and monster bashing is fun for a while, but eventually becomes repetitive.
Bonus stages and other levels
A decent variety of bonus stages and secret surprises fill the levels. To access bonus areas, Big Nose hops on mushrooms, walks through walls, and jumps onto invisible teleporters. Positive power-ups include rocks, high jump power, extra skateboard speed, and invincibility. Big Nose also risks finding items with negative effects.
Hard as a rock
This Big Nose game doesn't play too hard, but it offers challenges. Bignose starts with a continue and can earn more along the way. However, he quickly runs out of these and starting over is difficult.
A comparison
With the skateboard, Big Nose Freaks Out is a slight improvement over its predecessor. Although Camerica always stands for convincing 8-bit play, more development would not have harmed Big Nose.
Conclusion on Big Nose Freaks Out
Big Nose is a nice platformer for fans of the genre. However, it is not outstanding. Entertaining for retro fans, it lets you control the little Neanderthal with the big nose. It brings some improvements compared to its predecessor and it gets a game recommendation.
