Bad North shows itself at first glance with an idiosyncratic graphic. The game was released for PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
In Bad North you take small islands and protect them from invading troops. Each island represents a level. The aim is to destroy the attackers. Bad North is a real-time strategy game of the minimalist kind and it has it all. Use the cursor to move your troops across the islands. If you choose a troop, the game slows down. This makes it easier for you to orientate yourself during the battle. Your fighters attack the enemies on their own.
On every island there are houses that ud defend. If the residents are spared, you will receive gold as a reward. With this you improve and specialize your troops. You use the archers in long-range combat and ideally in an elevated position. In hand-to-hand combat, on the other hand, they are of no use. Your spear units are effective in head-to-head combat, but don't fight when they're moving. Your swordsmen can protect the archers with their shields.
Bad North demands a lot from you. Over time, the enemy messengers increase. New enemies with swords, shields, and bows penetrate the mist. If the opponents completely wipe out a unit from you, the upgrades and improvements disappear with them. The system generates the islands at random. The roguelike elements add some frustration.
Conclusion
Bad North has a peculiar graphic style, which with its minimalism does not harm the game. It gives the game its own character. Gameplay and mechanics are simple. Placing the troops for the opponents is fun and the game is an excellent challenge for real-time strategists. However, anyone who dares to play this game needs a certain degree of frustration tolerance. Bad North is definitely a recommendation.
