All Star Tennis 99 is a tennis simulation for the N 64 and for the Playstation that appeared in 1999, as the name suggests.
Tennis stars
In this game you will meet the famous tennis players from 1999. These include, for example, Michael Chang or Gustavo Kuerten. The question here is not which of the 16 characters you know and choose or which of the eight tennis venues you play, but how the gameplay is designed. The tennis venues differ depending on the flooring and can result in a faster or slower game. If you play on the grass, the rallies are shorter. They are longer on a clay court.
game modes
there is a friendly game mode for two players. You can compete against each other in singles or doubles. You have a single or solo player mode. In this you compete in tournaments. In the arcade mode you face different computer opponents that you have to defeat. As a little fun there is also the bomb mode, in which you are unable to move for a moment if such a small bomb explodes next to you. Of course, then you usually lose the ball.
With the serve into the game
you have different strokes available. Volley, praise, baseline strike, smashing the ball and serving allow some variations in the game. The important thing is how you feel about the forest when you hit it back. There is the possibility that you will be in the right place in time and that you can take your time for the kickback or whether you can just barely reach the ball. This also determines the angle of the ball and how it is returned. The special strokes are a little more difficult to use. Your energy bar has to fill up with a long rally and you have to wait for the right time.
Motivation
Unfortunately, this game doesn't give a lot of incentives for long-term motivation. There is no career mode or world ranking that you can use for guidance. Your settings options are limited to the color of the courtship, but not to the creation of players.
Graphics and sound
The music isn't particularly engaging. The sounds also leave something to be desired. The graphics are okay, but can be considered average. Unfortunately, the figures are not very detailed and the animations are not always smooth. The camera perspective is fine.
Conclusion
All Star Tennis 99 does not stand out from the crowd, which is mainly due to the lack of long-term motivation. Weak sound and graphics are not necessarily conducive to this. In return, the controls are quite simple. There are plenty of players and locations to choose from. This N 64 tennis game is ok, but nothing more.
