Baseball games on the older consoles have been nice, but nothing really baseball. The N 64 game All-Star Baseball'99 has beautiful graphics and great sounds. The game control has been set up intuitively.
The game
ASB'99 has an MLB license. This means 30 real Major League baseball Teams with all players are represented. There are four different game modes, including exhibition, season, playoffs and home run. Colorado Rockies right fielder and 1997 MVP Larry Walker assist the game and provide pitcher scouting reports. Season mode lets you send scouts into the minor leagues to look for new, up-and-coming players, trade players, sign new ones or release others. This allows you to put together your own players and teams. The controls are very precise and response has been set up quickly.
Graphics and animations
The game lacks nothing visually. The faces of the players are very easy to recognize and you can even see the wrinkles in the jerseys. They cast shadows from different light sources and the stadium looks like its real counterpart. There are signs in the parks, landscapes can be seen on the park walls and the animations of the players are very well done. Over 100 punch positions are available and 600 unique movements have been incorporated. These include catcher collisions, wall catches, the guide catches, errand boy and jump-pivot throws at second base. There are player injuries, dives, kneeling throws and more than 30 types of catch.
Perspective and sounds
During the game you have access to different camera positions. These can create dramatic effects. Sound and music are very well done and there are over 1000 exclamations and comments. The announcements add authenticity to the game.
The statistics
The statistics show every player and every team, including the league leadership, in over 200 categories. They were provided by STATS Inc. Perform away. At the end of a season, if a player has done well, he receives the MVP Award.
Criticism
