Unfortunately, there are not many role-playing games to be found on the N 64. One of the few is Aidyn Chronicles - The First Mage.
Sent on the search
Alaron is sent off by his king to find a missing farmer. When Alaron finds out what happened to this one, it's too late. Monsters killed the farmer and goblins attack and poison the young fighter. A healer finds him and takes care of him. Unfortunately, there is nothing she can do about the poisoning. So the young man returns to his king in the kingdom and reports to him. Your job as Alaron is to find a cure.

The combat system
Unfortunately, the combat system is not very mature. If you come across a monster, the game switches to combat mode. You have an almost unlimited area. The fights are round based. You can move around the fields, attack the monster, cast spells or use items. The first problem that arises is the distance you have to your opponent. At the beginning of the fight you are far too far apart and you have to face the opponent first. That means you can't attack right away. The fights drag on unnecessarily.
Gathering experience
When a fight is over, items, money and experience points are listed. If you have accumulated a certain number of experience points, you advance in the level. Your characteristics also change in the process. Depending on the level, the level of your strength points is also different. However, they fill up again when you take a break, for example by camping. But even during this, monsters can attack you. So before you take a break, save your score. You can camp at any time.
Class schedule
Graphically, Aidyn Chronicles could be better. The landscapes are not shown in great detail. They seem rather sparse. The characters are too angular
Conclusion
Story and atmosphere are very well done. RPG fans enjoy the opportunity to explore a large open world. Lots of secrets are waiting to be discovered in the huge game world. The only drawback is the combat system that experienced role-players do not burst into jubilation. Despite this, this game gets a definitive recommendation.
