Age of Mythology
Games & Poetry Podcast: Age of Mythology
The game
After Age of Empires 2, the Ensemble brought studios Age of Mythology in the game. This is an offshoot of Age of Empires in which reference is made to gods, mythical creatures, magic and ancient heroes. The game combines building strategy with complex branches of industry, upgrades and production facilities. The game was published by Microsoft Game Studios, which released it for Windows and Mac computers. At the beginning of Age of Mythology you choose a people and accordingly a deity.
Your troops
The warriors automatically form into associations. The behavior of the troops can be adjusted. You can be aggressive, defensive, or passive. However, if they encounter an enemy, the formation does not last. You can later summon a powerful titan to support troops. It can take a good 20 minutes to build a strong army. In addition to the regular units, there are mythological figures such as the sphinx, a cyclops or a frost giant.
The campaign
The solo campaign includes over 30 missions covering various mythological ancient sagas such as Troy, Ancient Greece and Ancient Egypt. The Vikings in Scandinavia should not be missing either. According to their abilities, each people has strengths and weaknesses.
Peoples and ages
While you pull ox carts with the Vikings, the Egyptians use animals such as camels, elephants, giant beetles and sea turtles. As in Age of Empires, there are different levels of ages that you can progress through with each race. Depending on the age, you unlock buildings, upgrades and units and decide which god to follow. The economic sector in Age of Mythology is complex and very extensive. You have to acquire four raw materials and build buildings such as barracks, temples, dams or caravans, among others. 50 deities, 50 structures, 80 units and 100 upgrades are waiting to be researched. Then there are miracles and magic.
Graphic
Age of Mythology has improved graphics with light effects, shadows, reflective water and day and night changes.
Titans
Titans is the Age of Mythology add-on. You take on the role of Castor, Arkanto's son, and lead the Atlanteans to rebuild their homeland. The Atlanteans are thus the new people. 12 missions tell the story and the threat of the resurrection of the titans from the underworld. In order to be able to send your own titan into battle, you have to reach the highest age and use a lot of resources.
Age of Mythology: Tale of the Dragon
Unfortunately, the game is not particularly interesting, but rather a boring strategy disaster. The animations, units, images and sounds are not new. Tale of the Dragon introduces the Chinese people with gods and heroes. There are new maps and a campaign. New units are added for the other races. The campaign has nine missions and no gripping story.
The balance of yin and yang has been disturbed, which is why chaos is falling over the Chinese empire. The general of the emperor is to restore the old order. The add-on disappoints across the board and is not recommended. There is no tension, only advice and explanations. Most of the buildings are available. The units are well balanced. New techniques and upgrades are being added by the Chinese. Unfortunately, Age of Mythology: Tale of the Dragon is nothing more than a mod. There is no real fun to play.
Conclusion
Age of Mythology is an interesting offshoot of Age of Empires. The missions never get boring and there is a lot to discover. Age of Mythology challenges the player and the multitude of missions is a challenge. The game is not played through quickly, as it takes a while to set up the city and the units. In addition to the Greeks, Egyptians and Vikings in the main game, the Atlanteans make a good addition. The fight with the titans is demanding and the mythological ambience is a nice change. Only the new add-on: Tale of the Dragon leaves a bad aftertaste. It could have been more than it is.
