Dragons of Flame is a side scrolling action role-playing game. It is based on the world of the dragon lance from the role-playing game Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. The developer of the game was US Gold, who was commissioned by Strategic Simulations Inc. The game is the sequel to Heroes of Lance and was released in 1989.
Dragons of flame
Dragons of Flame follows on from its predecessor. It is the game adaptation of the novel Dragons of Autumn Twilight written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. It was playable on the platforms Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Ataris ST, Commodore 64, FM Towns, MS-DOS, NES, PC-98 and ZX Spectrum. The game was only released in Japan. The reaction time for the attacks is not very long. In the worst case scenario, you will quickly send your characters to their deaths. The graphical representation of the game is nice, but a bit confusing in the side-scolling perspective.
The history
The protagonists of the game are Raistlin Majere, Tanis Half-Elf, Goldmond, River Wind, Tolpan Barefoot, Storm Fire Blade and Flint Fire Smith. You go into battle against the evil goddess Thakhisis and are looking for the sword Wyrmslayer. To do this, they have to explore the Pax Tharkas dungeon. They try to free 800 enslaved people and fight against Vermingaard, who, as a dark cleric, has entered into an alliance with the red dragon.
The game principle
The gameplay has not changed compared to Heroes of Lance. You have a group size of ten characters. The marching order of your group is determined by the order of the heroes. The battles are fought in real time, so the order of the heroes is a strategic decision. Magic-gifted characters must stand in the front row to cast their spells. If a figure is defeated, another one automatically moves up. In addition to the dungeons, you can explore the world on the surface from a bird's eye view. Your opponents are displayed so that you can avoid them if necessary. During the battles, the game changes to a side-scrolling perspective.
Conclusion
One aspect or another of the game leaves the player frustrated. Compared to Heroes of Lance, the game has not improved noticeably, but neither has it deteriorated. The story is interesting and is close to the original. Unfortunately, that doesn't necessarily discuss for the predecessor. The game is short and disappointing. It is only recommended for hardcore fans of the Dragon Lance series.
